Braimah Sulemana
Executive Director, Media Foundation for West Africa
Sulemana is the Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), the leading freedom of expression and media development organisation in West Africa. He previously worked with The Chronicle newspaper as News Editor from 2005 to 2007 and taught Mass Communication at the Africa University College of Communications between 2008 and 2009. Prior to these, he had taught in the basic school as a professional teacher from 1998 to 2002. Sulemana serves on various international Boards and Committees including being the current Secretary General of the ECOWAS Civil Society Platform on Transparency and Accountability in Governance (ECSOPTAG); current member of the Executive Committee of the West Africa Civil Society Forum (WACSOF); and a member of the Steering Committee of the African Network of Free Expression organisations (AFEX). From 2011 to 2015, Sulemana was part of the 13-member Governing Council of IFEX, the global network of 108 free expression organisations based in Canada; and since 2012, he has been a reviewer of the annual global press freedom ratings (Freedom of the Press Index) by the US-based Freedom House. Sulemana holds an M.Phil in Communication Studies (graduating as the overall best student) and a Bachelor’s Degree (First Class Hons) from the University of Ghana.
